EU Battery Passport Data Points by Category: The Complete Field List

In August 2026 the European Commission published official guidance setting out every data point the Digital Battery Passport must hold, organised by category and mapped against electric vehicle (EV), light means of transport (LMT) and industrial batteries. This page turns that guidance into a browsable reference: all 71 data points, what each battery category must show from 18 February 2027, and which fields are optional, conditional or not yet required.

About this guidance document

The source for this page is a guidance document the European Commission's DG GROW (Unit G2) published on 18 August 2026, now in its second version. Rather than write new rules, it walks through the existing ones and states, field by field, whether EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh need to show that information in the passport from 18 February 2027.

It carries no legal weight of its own. The Commission is careful to note that the guidance does not create new obligations, it only helps interpret ones that already exist in Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and the delegated and implementing acts that flesh it out, several of which are still being drafted. For manufacturers, importers and passport providers building against this field list, that makes it the closest thing to an authoritative checklist available before those acts are finalised.

We have restructured the original table into eight readable categories below, kept every source reference, and added our own notes on why particular fields are deferred. The underlying content is reused under the Commission's CC BY 4.0 licence.

Reading the status labels

Each data point carries its own status for EV, LMT and industrial batteries. Four labels cover every case in the guidance.

Mandatory

Required in the passport for that battery category from 18 February 2027.

Optional

To be filled in only where the information is available, such as a manufacturer's web address.

If applicable

Required only where the underlying condition is met, for example a field that only applies to some industrial batteries, or only where a commercial warranty is offered.

Not required

Nothing to add here yet. The reason varies: the field duplicates one captured elsewhere, its format hasn't been published, or its own deadline sits later than February 2027.

Where a field simply doesn't apply to a battery category, for example most state of health rows for EV batteries, we mark it “Not required” rather than leaving it blank.

Static data vs. dynamic data

The first 50 data points in this guide are static: fixed at manufacture and unlikely to change over the battery's life, covering identification, composition, ratings and documentation. Data points 51 to 71 are dynamic. They are generated by the battery's use, typically calculated by its battery management system (BMS), and are expected to update through the battery's service life rather than being set once.

Dynamic data covers rated capacity, capacity and power fade, internal resistance, round trip efficiency, state of health and usage history. Because it depends on a working BMS and real operating data, its applicability varies more between EV, LMT and industrial batteries than the static fields do.

Data points FAQ

Is this guidance document legally binding?

No. The European Commission is explicit that it is a guidance document, not a source of new rights or obligations. It helps interpret the data requirements in Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and its delegated and implementing acts, but those remain the legal source. Where this page or the guidance conflicts with the regulation itself, the regulation governs.

Why do EV, LMT and industrial batteries need different data points?

The regulation sets different obligations by battery category. EV batteries carry close to the full field list, including state of certified energy and several performance fields that do not apply to other categories. LMT batteries pick up the fuller state of health breakdown that EV batteries do not need. Industrial batteries vary the most, because many fields only apply where the specific battery has a battery management system or where a parameter is relevant to that battery's design.

What does “not required” actually mean, given the passport itself is mandatory from February 2027?

It means that field can stay blank in the passport as of February 2027, even though the passport itself is mandatory. Most of these rows are deferred because their format or measurement basis hasn't been finalised, for example the carbon footprint declaration, or because their own legal deadline sits later, such as due diligence reporting from August 2027.

Which data points become mandatory after February 2027?

Responsible sourcing information tied to the battery due diligence policy report becomes mandatory from 18 August 2027. The carbon footprint declaration and label, and the recovered cobalt, lithium, nickel and lead percentages, are not yet dated. They apply once the relevant implementing and delegated acts set out their format, referenced in Article 8 and Article 48(1) of the regulation.

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic data point?

Static data points, roughly the first 50 in the guidance, are fixed when the battery is manufactured. Dynamic data points, numbers 51 to 71, are generated by the battery in use and are expected to be updated through its service life, typically via its battery management system.

Does an industrial battery without a battery management system need to report state of health data?

State of health data depends on a working BMS to generate it, so a battery without one cannot produce it. The guidance marks most performance and dynamic fields for industrial batteries as “if applicable” for exactly this reason. Where a parameter genuinely cannot be produced, this is a case to resolve with the relevant market surveillance authority rather than a blanket exemption.

Who is responsible for making sure this data is complete and accurate?

The economic operator placing the battery on the EU market, typically the manufacturer or importer, is responsible for the passport record. The data points sit inside that record, linked to the physical battery through its unique identifier and reachable through a QR code or similar data carrier.

Is the carbon footprint declaration required for any battery before February 2027?

This guide covers passport display requirements. Separately from the passport, carbon footprint declaration obligations for EV and industrial batteries above 2 kWh already start applying from February 2026 under other provisions of the regulation. The passport display of that data, covered by the carbon footprint declaration and label rows above, is what remains pending an implementing act.
